Campus of Aichi University Faculty of Law

NAGOYA Campus

where the Graduate School--Law Department, Business Administration Department, the Faculty of Law, and the Faculty of Business Administration are located.

Spread on a green hillside overlooking lakes and woods, the new campus of Aichi University is none the less only forty minutes by train from the centre of Nagoya. This part of Aichi Prefecture has been set aside for education, research and sports, and has been officially designated as the ‘Nagoya Eastern Hills Research Zone'. Already, scattered here and there in the hills are the Aichi Education Centre, the Toyota Central Research Institute, the Toyota Training Centre, the Chubu Electric Power Training Centre, and the Public Education and Research Organisation. Over the hill from the new campus is Aichi Lake where the Central Japan Regatta takes place every June, and nearby are the Miyoshi Country Club and the Wago Golf Links.

In April 1988 the Law Department and the Business Administration Department started teaching here. The campus at Kurumamichi, for all its good points, was too small for expansion to take place there. The opening of this third campus was a big event in the history of our university, and it makes it possible to improve the teaching and the quality of the education we offer.

The new campus has been very thoughtfully designed and well built. Although it is situated in the heart of nature on the crown of a hill, the buildings are conveniently placed close together in a balanced way, and the whole place has a unity about it. As you go in through the main entrance, on the right is the Research Building, and on the left is the Administration Block, while straight ahead is the Concourse above which are the Library and the Seminar Classrooms. It is possible for students to move around the campus on a rainy day without an umbrella and not get wet.

The Administration Building(right). On the first floor is the General Administration Office. Beside the path to the Student Union is the Job Placement Information Centre, and the Health Clinic. On the Second Floor are conference rooms, the President's office and some reception rooms, and also the offices of the Deans of the Faculties. The Dining Rooms is in the Student Union.

KURUMAMICHI Campus

(The Nightschool of the Faculty of Law)

Out of all the university campuses in Nagoya, this is the most convenient. It is about ten minutes by Subway Sakura-dori Line from Nagoya Station to Kurumamichi Station which stands right in front of the campus. It is possible to get there easily from almost any direction. If you enter the South Gate (the usual way in) you find yourself face to face with the campus buildings and their many classrooms.

Aichi University Kurumamichi Campus in Nagoya was started originally as the Night School of the Faculty of Law and Economics, with the purpose of offering university education to young workers. In spite of the restricted space it developed into a daytime school as well and consolidated steadily. The Library there has a large number of books. There is also a buffet restaurant, a tearoom, a Cooperative Shop and a bookstore. Its compact nature has meant that it has always possessed a lively atmosphere.

In April 1988 the daytime schools all moved out to the new campus at Miyoshi, leaving this campus to be used exclusively by the Faculty of Law Night School. Despite the limited size of the campus, its location near the centre of Nagoya enables students to keep closely in touch with the life of their city and with the activities of students at other colleges.

Campus Life Throughout the Year

It is spring. Aichi University freshmen gather with sparkling faces. With the Entrance Ceremony four years of university life begins. At the campus in Toyohashi the cherry trees are in full bloom. They look as if they are congratulating the new students on their arrival. Orientation begins right away the next day. The students have a discussion meeting in their class and meet their professor for the first time. They begin to get an idea of university life……and once they go out of their classrooms they encounter a rush of requests to join clubs and circles. There are about 190 to choose from and it is a very hard choice.

In about April 14th the long awaited lectures begin. The subjects students have chosen to study are the basis of their lecture schedule throughout the year. The impression of hearing the voices of their professors for the first time remains with them all their lives. When the excitement has calmed down ‘Gogatsubyo' May disease sets in …but there is no time for the students to be affected by such a thing. To begin with there is the May Festival at Nagoya Campus. Then at the end of May there is a volleyball tournament with six members in a team organised by the Physical Education Department. When this happens freshmen truly become Aichi University undergraduates with body and soul.

At the end of June the Festival of the Literary Arts Union is held. It is a big event almost equal to the school festival in the autumn, and freshmen can make their contribution. Early in July the students start the Chinese Summer Seminar at Nankai University and the Peking Second Foreign Language University. At the centre of this seminar is the study of Chinese Conversation, and it is said that the students feel that during the two months in China they learn as much as they do in a whole year at Aidai! The participants were full of confidence last year and they said that they managed to talk a great deal of Chinese every day. In the middle of July the Summer Vacation draws near. Everybody is talking about summer camps or the excursions by their clubs or seminars……but it has to be remembered that the examination of the work done during the term just gone by takes place after the summer holiday.

Autumn is the arts and sports season. Aichi University has two gatherings. One is a seminar, the other is a softball party. Seminars, clubs and professors all take part in the game. Either you are in a cheering party or you are playing. In late October the Aichi University Festival is held. The first event is a fancy dress parade and a Mikoshi parade. It has become one of Toyohashi's most important yearly events now. There are concerts, teaparties, rakugo, bazaars and exhibitions. A large crowd of people fills the campus. November 15th is the anniversary of the foundation of our university. In 1946 the establishment was approved by the Ministry of Education. This day is a holiday at Aichi University and we think of the establishment traditions then. Late in November the selection tests of each seminar take place. The present seminars hold oral tests and written examinations.

The Winter Vacation begins on December 24th, and later, when the end of year exams begin on January 21st there are many snow burned faces to be seen on campus. All students work desperately at this time. Early in February the Physical Education Department opens a skischool in Tsugaike which offers a wonderful experience. Every year there are about a hundred participants. Skiing through the silver world of Tsugaike Kogen is the experience of a lifetime. In the middle of February 60 students go to study at Reading University in England. The examinations are over! It is the season of graduation parties. Drink to your hearts content. But graduates feel sentimental about leaving…The graduation ceremony is on about March 22nd. Excited voices disappear from Aichi University. The campus is silent until the next entrance ceremony.
